I currently have a AMD Athlon 64x2 dule core 5400+  in a ASUSm3n78-vm mother board. I am winding up to play diablo and maybe want to upgrade my cpu, I have the min. to play but im thinking i should upgrade any sugestions?

Well, that processor is socket AM3 and your motherboard is socket AM2.
It's still compatible, but only drawback is you wont be able to use DDR3 memory, only DDR2.
If you already have DDR2 memory, then it doesn't matter.

I'd personally get the 955 instead of the 965. Only 200mhz slower, you'd never know the difference and save a few bucks too.

What's your other computer specs? Hate to upgrade your cpu and have the real bottleneck be memory/video card.

PS.. I check my email 20,531 times a day, but forum only "between diaper changes".

Diablo III should be very playable, but I don't know your system specs.  In beta I'm running a very high end box and getting huge FPS, and on my c2d e8500 w/ sli 9800gt's (mediocre box) I'm still getting close to triple digit FPS at points.  However, this is beta, so the retail version may include more bells & whistles graphically.

Either way, you're never going to get an AM3 cpu to work with an AM2 socket mobo.  My recommendation:  the new intel Sandybridge CPU's are super affordable and are quick as can be for pretty much all around computing and gaming.  Save a bit of cash on the front end and put it toward a GTX 580 or some other very nice GPU.

Yeah, I went looking for it and couldn't find it so that's what I figured. Have an IRL friend that purchase 1 year sub for WoW so he gets it for free. Not sure if he got the demo though.

well what I ended up with is I replaced the cpu fan with a rockfish universal, and put a 120mm fan at the back of the case. ALL I could get out of this chip was 4.19ghz I was hoping atleast 4.7 but thats a no go. Over all I am happy with the set up and the game play is 10 x better. Again thanks Alka you blow good smoke!!

Did you replace the whole cpu/heat sink or just the fan on the stock heat sink?
Should be able to take that cpu much higher than 4.19.
You've got a great mobo so only things that could be holding it back are cpu cooler (not likely), memory (which did you get?), or just need to add
more voltage to the cpu. (aka vcore)

I did replace the whole unit, has thouse cool copper tubes around it. The cpu is running at 23c so I did up the voltage to the cpu but did not have time to see if I could push it futher, I will do that tonight and post. I realy dont understand all the multiplyers/numbers I am using as I am going off the utube vidio you sent but by increasing the voltage My values are different then that guys now. My over all question is what is the limit I should stop at with the voltage befor I do damage to the chip, also do I or can I up the voltage to the memory as well?

I think the absolute top voltage for cpu is 1.5v. That's with extreme cooling so never go that high. The 1.48 I told you last night was tops.
If it boots into windows and doesn't crash while gaming,  prime95, etc then start backing he vcore down till it does crash. The less vcore you use means the lower
the cpu temp means longer life of cpu.

I still say go by the last email I sent you, that should get you going.
And I always set all my memory timings/voltage manually as the motherboard normally doesn't get the settings correct on auto.

ok here it is...I got it stable at 4631.1 MHZ I set the cpu voltage to 1.48 its runing at about 35c. cinebench results were ok not great. Where I needed to change  the setting was the mutiplyer, that I have set at 23. I think going from 3600 out of the box to 4600 is very cool... And don't worry about synthetic benchmarks like cinebench, passmark, futuremark, etc etc etc..
Just worry about performance in games you play, applications you use, multitasking etc..
Who gives a shit if your pc can only get 20fps in Crysis when you don't play Crysis?

For fun, you can overclock it a little bit if ya want.
I never overclock video cards. A less than 10% performance increase isn't worth the greater than 20% increase in temps, especially with stock video card coolers.
And any money put towards a new aftermarket cooler would be better put towards a new video card later.
But ya, for fun and curiosity you can't bump it up a bit
