New Rig.
«

April 17, 2010, 02:50:51 PM »
It's that time of year again. Q1 bonus just hit my bank account, and I'm still celebrating a major victory in court over my daughter's idiot mother. The kiddo lives with me full time now and I just cashed my first child support check, so life is good. Since my kid is starting to get pretty good at using the mouse and keyboard, I thought I'd give her my old rig (Q9650 @ 3.6ghz, 9800GTX x2 SLI, 4gb ram, etc) and build a new totally impractical machine but hey, it's a celebration!
Vital Stats:
Intel core i7 980x Extreme Edition hexacore
12 gb 1333 ram which will be overclocked (cheaper than DDR3 1066? Amazing)
2x HD 5970 crossfire
256gb SSD (can always add a standard HDD if I need storage, which I won't)
My I.T. guys are going to be freeing me up an ASUS mobo (not sure why they have one lying aorund) and a 1200w power supply from one of their old servers. Should be pretty rock solid.

Yes, it's obviously just for playing Q2 as I stated that clearly in my post-- idiot. What other use could I possibly find for this computer than the game I play less than 10 hours a month?
Anyway, no Alka, I'm not bragging nor am I seeking advice, so I suppose this may be better suited in General Discussion or Off Topic, I'm just excited to be building a new PC. The last time I built something this "extreme" was an old P4 that's still up and running. I gave it to my parents to use to fetch email and play the silly flash games they love so much. Normally I build something more disposable, knowing the tech I'd utilize is past its prime, but priced as such that if it's useless in a year, that's just fine. However, like I said, I'm celebrating and thought I'd share-- don't be a sourpuss.

i'm just jealous cause im poor. ive been doing a lot of HD video editing lately and would love to have a machine like the one you're building.
and when there is a "
" in my post, u can rest assured that im attempting humor as opposed to being a sourpuss.
ps, ddr 1333 is soooooo 2009. get with the times.

it'll outperform 1600 with a decent overclock. Not like the difference would even be noticeable, tbh.

T! ! You should hear her talk shit on Vent. It's hilarious.
Legend, I like the antec case but the haf 922 & 932 are really growing on me. Honestly the case would be purely aesthetic because I'm liquid cooling.

Hm... So I DID mention Q2 in my original post! Darn it, I guess I owe you an apology!
LOL Yowza, we'll see what happens. I've got a long way to go before she hits 11, and much longer before she hits 18. Once she starts dating I think I'll retire and take her to a remote island somewhere.
Intrawebs? Sure, it'll have the nets.

n1 cleaner.
I just ordered the other day....
Intel Core i7 930 Bloomfield, 2.8ghz
6gb Corsair Dominator 1600 memory
640gb SATA 6/gbs HD
and gonna reuse my Radeon x1950 Pro for a week or two to put it to work, then gonna grab a GTX 285 or something similar.
850w Corsair PSU
Gigabyte X58A UD3R board
Should be here on Thursday, can't wait.
You should check to make sure that the asus mobo your IT guys are hookin' you up with supports USB 3.0 and SATA 6/gbs.
With a 6gb/s SDD.. you'll be loading quake 2 maps in .2 seconds. Since thats all you'll be doing with that new rig, obv.

how long do those SSD hard drives last?
I hear that when they do break, they break like suddenly and in a way that all your shit is lost (as opposed to disk HD which quietly demise over several days/weeks/months). Of course with a gaming rig who cares, but if it doubles as a home pc with photos and shit then you might want that extra HD in there for your files n' shiet.
hook a trackball up to that, yo.

Assuming there is no defect, it should last upwards of 1,000,000 hours or 115 years if reading/writing 100% of the time... In other words, it shouldn't ever go bad before I'm done with it. I will post my thoughts on it once I've given it a few days of play time.

SSD drives are the single biggest improvement for PC's in well....a long ass time.
Wouldn't have went with such a large one, but sounds like you have money to light on fire so why not. I would have gotten 4-5 smaller ones and put them in a RAID array - much better performance for the same price.
Or 24...

Yeah, just ask my sister how she turned out. On a side note, boarding school kids also party the hardest - way more drugs you'll ever see than in public schools.

Sure did, I'm up and running. Haven't really had a good block of time to sit down and really tweak it, but got most of my programs installed. I'm also side by side with my previous build, so transferring files over has been a snap. I've got a mini-lan party going on in my house.

As a side note, I really have grown to like Win7. And I've got nothing but good things to say about this LED monitor I bought,
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/office/monitors/premium/LS23WHUKFK/ZA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail
. It's even nicer than the Dell SX2210 on my other PC, and I love that monitor

Is that a TN or IPS LCD? Doesn't say on the product specifications. Thinking about upgrading to a higher resolution/higher quality image LCD when I build a new rig. Damn Samsung.
And where are the new computer nudes Cleaner!?

It's a TN.
Honestly, it used to matter, nowadays, TN's have caught up--- unless you do some kind of digital imaging, then I'd still recommend an IPS, but TN's are great for gaming.

Cleaner - I had an LCD one coming with my new computer from cyberpowerpc.com so the one I order I sent to my son in NYC. He loves it and I don't like the LCD over my monster Tube Viewsonic. So, I have one coming to me next week.
