Okay...can't help you with the last two, but regarding lag and/or packet loss:

I checked couple nights ago when Bones told me people were experiencing problems on the server and saw that entering our data center there was a problem for a short time. It cleared up fairly quickly and I haven't heard of any problems since then.

If there is a problem, please run a tracert a few times to show where the problem is and send it to me. If the problem is in your routing, I can't do anything about that. But, if it is with our data center, your tracerts will help solve it.

Thank you.

You too, Cleaner.  grin

Things that do not help resolve the problem:

1) Saying things in server like...

     "stupid server"

     "stupid lag"

     "stupid worm"

2) Coming in IRC channel and saying....

10-13-09, 21:47 < h0ps`afk> better fix the server or somethin, im not playing my match tomorrow if everyoens lagging and has to 'deal with it'
10-13-09, 21:47 < h0ps`afk> we just played on match server few games, everyone is pjing, every minute

10-13-09, 21:50 < Riles> worm reset the match server
10-13-09, 21:50 < Riles> everyones gettin mad PL

Things that DO help resolve the problem....

1) Taking time to run a tracert to server, saving file and noting date with time and timezone...then emailing it to me.

2) Catch me in IRC when the problem is occuring..if I'm around..so I can run a reverse tracert to you.

To make it easier...download this: http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/ftrace/wftrace.exe

A nice GUI interface with an easy copy text button so you can paste it in your email.

Now that I have got that off my chest...an update of sorts.

I am in touch with network guys at our data center and so far nothing obvious shows up. We are monitoring the situation. The tracerts are very important to this so keep those cards and letters coming.

Timewarner/Roadrunner has been experiencing problems in routing to our data center over the last week or so. If that is your ISP...sorry, nothing we can do.

Restarting the server will do absolutely nothing to help either...so stop asking that. We ain't running Windows 3.1.  tongue

Update from the data center:
Quote
Today at the time referenced there was an attack to another customer behind the firewall, which was mitigated within minutes. Regarding the other times, I don't see a record of any issues. It would be best if we could also get the source IP address from any traceroutes being performed (and perhaps a reverse traceroute from you if available).

I don't see any other issues on the links between you, the firewall or upstream routers at this time. We will closely monitor the firewall for any further issues, and if you notice more issues please let us know with the to/from traceroutes and a summary of 100 pings so we can the amount of packetloss.

Thanks,

Network Engineering

There was a bit of packet loss this morning when I ran tracert to server, that is when there was an attack on another server behind the firewall.

With all these tracerts you guys are gonna send me? Include your IP to save me trouble, please. And a ping summary would be nice too.

Open a command prompt and type following: ping  -n 100 208.43.95.250

When it completes, copy the summary for me...should look like this if no problem:

Ping statistics for 208.43.95.250:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 44ms, Maximum = 47ms, Average = 45ms

Thank you for your cooperation.  grin

It looks like one of time warner's backbones (ae-1-0.pr0.dca10.tbone.rr.com) is experiencing 25% PL at the moment.

Any number of things govern your route and it can change daily..or at any moment. Changes can even occur because of a trunkline being cut on the other side of the country and traffic being rerouted from that.

Peering agreements between ISPs determine what carriers are used.

For reference, here is an overview of our network providers: http://www.softlayer.com/facilities_network_n1.html

I'm reviving this thread as someone has been bugging me to "restart the server" again due to their lag.  rolleyes

Please, please, please...help me to help you. Restarting the server will not fix your problem. There is no problem with the server itself.

If you have a problem, read above and send me some info that will show where the problem is. I can't wave a magic wand and fix your routing. Please, please, please...help me to help you.
