First off, Riles can't beat his way out of a soaking wet paper bag!  He would lose in a 1v1 of any game to me, "dirt", and yet I am not on his list!

And looking closer at his choices, I would say Riles is trying to ride on the reputation as a good player by associating his name with those that are somewhat good.  But come on now, blowing sunshine up the other players ass to attempt to "boost" your own reputation is so "paulwall'ish",  damn, man...

• I pretty much dominate Fors, and honestly, there's about an 80% chance playah is a good bit better than me.
• I haven't seen Bones play in at least a month.  (granted that means my data is a month out-of-date and he may be a powerhouse tbh now)
• I've never seen you play offense in a big game.

Why schucks, thanks pal!!  I wish I could still play as much as I did and stay competitive, but I just can't do it like I used to.  I got a stepson who I have to watch his every step cause he tries to do minimum work at school, and hopes for the maximum.  My newborn is freaking awesome, but man can it be frustrating.  I can still turn games around though........just as long as Amateur, Hops, Wake, and $lasher aren't there.  Thanks for the compliment BB!

ksoul, i know i left a few people out on that list, I went by mostly match play, pickup play, then pub play in that order. I never saw you degen and a few others in matches, plus I only went to the top 15 in my list all time. I'm sure you would have made it into that  . Being an offensive guy myself when choosing a defensive player is easy, how well he holds his position, tech, and team work.
Pleb by far was the best all around defensive player period I can remember. Hell I remeber some of the v.23 guys saying after their match with them, you only won because you had pleb! lol I think that was skint that said that to be exact. Playing on stealth's team for ds, he brought a calmness to a team when he played. You were always comfortable having him playing defense because he could take on 2 offensive guys at the same time and kill em. Plus he had the ability to run the flag as well. High had the same ability as well on defense, probally the 3rd best railer I've seen to date. 1st being Rail[SpB] and h0ps coming in 2nd.

Offensivley hands down h0ps is about the best i've seen at least on caco, and bleteys. He needs to work more on stronghold which is is least favorite map, and of course is an all-time favorite. Atilla and Jade were instrumental to a 45 win streak for the ]KL[ on the league for OGL. They both should have been 2.a and 2.b imho. Both very good grapplers and very good railers and quad whores. These 2 guys pretty much taught me the finer points to running offense and escourting.


If I had to construct a team of 5 right now and have em go at it, it would be the following.

Pleb - defense
Stealth - defense
high - defense
h0ps - offense
Atilla - offense

2 alternates:
Rail[SpB] - defense
Jade[SpB] - offense

A lot has changed in quake 2 since their time, players got a lot better especially with movement. I've watched the old demos and I'm very bored and unimpressed. I think the people who were playing PUs about a year ago together showed how intense this game got. I remember when high came back for a few days and was getting beat by some of the pub heros like sly. Their old style of play just did not work anymore. Even in their prime our PU teams from a year ago would destroy them. It's nice to reminisce but the truth is players now are a lot better than the players then. So, if Ksoul were to make a team from players now, this team would easily win. Poor h0ps would be screwed in that match.

I'm going to speak for myself on this one, but i remember when I was completely in my prime joining a pub and playing bleteys blues and completely owning a whole team of about 10-13 players, being able to turn a game around from a 5 nothing deficit and winning the map. (of course having decent team support).

Also, playing against crow,slasher,hops,bishop,animal,T! etc,etc (all in their prime). in 5 on 5 matches on bleteys (caco would be more evenly matched and alot more even skills between players) and absolutely dominating the competition no matter who was playing (except maybe joem). Also, owning the euros on their server with a 120 ping playing against 30 pingers and dominating all over.

I guess the point im trying to make is, there are not nearly as many good players now a days hence why no one really plays aka. myself.  This new school everyone speaks of ex. yf, Lydia,angry,whoever else i may have left out nef, cake, Marla singer,simmeth,etc. May all be fine and dandy in pub and be able to hit shots, but thats about it. they will never compete with the old school greats no matter how much longer they play or try to improve their game. I can count on one hand how many actually good players still play on a regular basis;

Some people have it and some people don't. and that's as good as you will ever get.

its like comparing 1940's baseball vs. todays baseball, or 1940's hockey and todays hockey.  Equipment has changed, the game has changed etc. Also many of the players that were listed havent played ctf since like 2001

I know pleb was amazing.  I was personally amazed by his amazingness on several occasions.  I didn't play much ogl at the time so I never fought him in match, but on springfield . . . sheesh.

That being said, my game has improved a lot and so has others.  Just watch old demos.  The players move slow, it's clunky.  Back then there were few that "got it" and played the game to its limits, and that's what set them apart from the crowd.  Now, the crowd has caught up some and it's harder to stand out.  Most of us will never get to the level pleb did and others like him, but we're far from the thousands of clueless quakers that were cannon fodder to peeps like him back in the day.  I'd say the good players now would belong to some of the best clans from back in the day of ogl.

P.S. remember when sub 10 second caps on caco was, like, omfg no wai!!!!!  Now hops does it in what, 8.4?   even I can eek out a 9.9 every now and again.

Lol, it all makes sense now. I guess some players, like riles, are still under the delusion that I suck. Which is why he just said during a game that I wouldn't get a cap with himself and cake on the opposing team, I'm cracking up at this point, because Riles thinks he's formidable opponent for me, then the ass whoopin ensued on a map I suck at, caco. I brought his ass back down to Earth real fast. He forgot he didn't have hops or slasher on his team to help him out, tsk tsk, and a lot of other players often forget that too.  I put his ass to sleep, literally, he went off to bed after that.

For an unbiased list, try asking someone who is new to ctf from another mod.

And another thing, players need to stop being scared of losing under a certain name, and come on with their main aliases for a change.



And I also find it hilarious the way some people like bringing up ancient names as far as good players are concerned. Yes, they were excellent players for their time but you have got to realize that an average player today is way better than the best of the best was back then. There's no argument as far as that topic's concerned.

Now as far as the "Old Schoolers" comment, most of the people I mentioned were great players, something you'll never be given you current playing style. OK, I guess you must like losing then. Sure, I'm a selfish player. I'm sorry, is Quake 2 an RPG or a FPS? I thought the goal was to kill the enemy and capture the flag, which I do quite well.

I'm not gonna argue further what I said about players who are long gone. Just know that any intelligent person wouldn't argue against what I said, it's just common sense. As time goes by, skill increases, at different rates for different players, but it increases in most, if not all, cases.

Maybe if someone like I respected, like Worm, or Yowza, or hell, stowned, or  leftovers, made a list and I wasn't on there, I'd be mad. But if a scrub like Riles makes a list, c'mon now.

So please, don't be fooled by the notion that someone not picking me means I'm any less skilled that I actually am, or that I'll eventually think I suck. You're a hell of a lot better at combat than I am, but strategically speaking, you're an idiot.  I remember once on the pub I made you blow a game on Fright Night because I got doc and let you chase me around for SIX MINUTES, during which time you stopped going for quad and subsequently your team lost a 3-cap lead and ended the game losing by 2.  But you just HAD to have that doc.  Yeah, you eventually killed me, but I kept you distracted for a third of the game, and enabled my team to win.  You do this kind of stuff all the time, and it's why none of the match players think you're any good.

I'll be the first to admit I'm not that good at combat, but I'm damn good at strategy and keeping other players informed of what's going on.  If I'm on defense in a match and my flag gets stolen, I tell my teammates on ventrilo which way the flag is going THE MOMENT the FC goes for an exit.  That enables my teammates, regardless of where they are in the map, to get to a position to intercept, and we can converge for flag recovery.  That's just one example of things I do for the benefit of the team.  I'd never expect this kind of thought from you, and it's why the other match players respect me.

I think, sly can be strategic when he wants to be, regardless of pub/match situation, whether it be the right move or the wrong move, he can at least put forth the effort. Sometimes during pickups, people at the match server get picked over you sly, maybe not because they are better, but simply for communication. Communication can bring raise any team game....any. Simply because people are on ventrilo, makes them more useful, i don't know if you don't like getting on it, or what the deal is, but we're friendly when we get on there..

I remember a while back, confronting joem.. i was a learning player (pretty much with the same attitude, actually it was probably a lot worse, ive gotten better), i was good, but not great. I, for some reason, just didn't like joe, maybe it was because at the time he was better than me, and me being me, couldn't handle that. I would always make fun of him, or do this or do that, just to bash him. But, and he knows this because we've talked about it, once i started getting on ventrilo, and had a microphone, people wise up. You realize his viewpoint of the game, and take it into consideration, realize whats actually happening...Now joe and i are really good friends, and keep in touch through AIM.
I know sly's came on vent a few times awhile back, and you still had the same attitude that you would on the pub. Trash talking (not in a playful manner).. Like i bash the hell out of kt on vent, probably more than anyone. Because i can probably say without being wrong, he looks up to me, and wants to be a better player, he has come a long long way and really is a well-rounded player now, still a few kinks though :p. But he knows its all in good fun, we can do that because we've talked to each other a lot. If you get to know people sly, you change, you don't continue that type of 'intentional' behavior. You can relax, enjoy, and laugh with everyone. You don't always have to be such a hero in everyone's eyes, Ive learned that through error of ways.

I understand its always great to be competitive, its what drives the game, as i know you say many times, but leave it on the server, don't bring that into ventrilo, vent is a place for people to get along (unless freak is there, /mute).

If anything, I handled the immature behavior by a few of the players on there quite well, Naveed is just one of the names that comes to mind. I also remember some jokes about me and the cotton industry.  And you had a few antics that come to mind with the computer voice on vent. Crow was pretty cool. I remember saying "Owned" sometimes, that's hardly anything major and personal, unlike some others.
I'll admit I like rivalry and competitiveness, like you said above, and some of that is lost when you're on vent. And for me, this game would be pretty boring without that.

I agree with both sides of this discussion, to certain points.

The good side to ventrilo!

First, Ventrilo can be a lot of fun, you get to know who people really are!

Second, I have made several friends using ventrilo!  Someone Angry is one of my better friends along with DK, Legend, Hops, and many more.

Third, Yes, it does help if you have good communication skills while in a match and using ventrilo.  I always tried my best to give a good, full description of where the EFC was, and what he had to shoot with, and how much damaged I think he took.


The bad side to ventrilo!  And, why I no longer use it.  You can find me on Team Speak where ACME regulates the shit that goes on!

First, you run into pure self centered assholes, EX: Paulwall for starters.  More problems have come from his attitude and views than I can count.  He has caused games to end early, he has purposely stopped shooting enemies and just running into them and dieing to hurt his team, he has consistently kept his teammates from getting techs and power ups!  And, he was even banned for using impulse commands on the BackShooters servers.

Second, You tend to run into people like Freak!  I personally could care less about how someone feels about themselves like freak insists of demonstrating to us all while he is on vent.  It is clear he is not a happy person, and I have had enough of listening to his snorting drugs while on vent.

Third, When someone does do something that is not wanted on vent, the others generally just shut their mouths and ignore what happened.  People need to speak up when something wrong has been done!  Someone’s young niece, “No names please”, hopped on vent one night, and a few others, “again, no names please”, were acting like fucking assholes!  Sorry, no other word fits.  I spoke up when nobody else did!  Stand up for what is right, stop acting like cowards!  A 13 year old girl that stumbled onto vent using her uncles computer should not have been treated that way!

I really do miss talking with my online friends on vent, but the aggravation of dealing with certain assholes on there isn’t worth the headaches, sorry my friends.  I use team speak 2 now and mIRC’s channels #acme, #thespot, and #cars.  Alka, DK and myself with snakes help started that #cars channel to be like a back porch for the acme house, a place where we can go and just be stupid and have fun without bothering or offending anyone in #acme.  Now if we can just keep alka from kicking and banning everyone that comes in, hehehe.

Like I said though, I am sorry, I have many friends that are still using vent, and I do miss talking to them.  But, with team speak 2 running and managed by acme admins, I think I will stay loyal to acme.  WORM, YOWZA, and the others have earned that much to say the least!

No offense meant Justin, you know me better than that.  But, the last few dozen times I logged onto vent the only people, "I use that term loosely," was paulwall and lydia!  NOT much incentive there to stay and wait for someone normal to log on.  So, what good does the mute option do in this situation? 

Snake had the right idea, ban paul, then nobody has to deal with his bullshit anymore.  The backshooters servers were a lot more enjoyable after paul was banned.  BTW, isn't he 17 years old now?  And, I think I will just shush up now.  My opinion of paul/rm/robby/the hops & twitch wannabe is well known.  I have no use and no respect for an asshole such as paulwall...

Lets list some of the best sports you've ever played with.  All around fair, friendly, nice players.  The problem is most of them go unnoticed because they never start anything or cause problems.  There's more than I'll be able to list becuase most of them I've never gotten to know.

Here's some of the best sports i've played with over the years and spent a decent amount of time chatting with.


Hype was always one of the coolest and chillest q2 players. 
Targe, Target could cause some occasional ruckus, but was never serious.  I'm not sure if he knows how to.. does that make him a joke?
Blackberry,  If anyone is ever upset or pissed off by blackberry you're an idiot who's been baited.
Lefty was a great sport.  If anyone ever caused a problem with lefty it was their fault.

ok, i retract my last statement about vent always being a peaceful place, people on there talk shit, and its verbal, but again, its still in a playful manner, between owning kt, and shit-talking about how lucky slasher really is (its unbelieveable, literally), we are all friends. You can still have plenty of competitiveness and be on the ventrilo server. No reason not to get on if you have a mic. The cotton industry was legend's bullcrap, you can always mute him if you really want to. Naveed was and probably always will be a tool, besides he's long gone, he doesnt play anymore so you don't hvae to worry about him. Yes, I enjoy the rail warz server and gameplay more.  No techs, RAIL ONLY, 1 hit kills, and a fast laser hook which I still suck at!  But the gameplay is fast, clean, and much less cluttered than all weapons CTF.  Plus, most games are 3v3's to 6v6's and sometimes on larger maps I have seen 8v8's and even on ocasion, a 9v9's or 10v10's!!!  The 9v9's and 10v10's rarely ever happen though.

But all weapons ctf seems slow and clunky to me now.  I have always been a fan of Rail only, and rail warz hits the spot for me.

I was owned by the timelimit on user loging as I had posted a long reply citing war stories versus verious names on your list Legend.    

Anyway first off I will say that as far as the newer kids on the list.  Crow, Hops, Slasher, even the ones you didn't list; Ksoul, Wake, Naveed,  High towards the end of his playing time.  I will never probably have the hand eye cordination that these kids have so I would say they are all better than me easy but I would say and I doubt that any of them would argue that I can compete with them in an evenly teamed match.  That being said most of the old school players on your list ( a lot of them on the same teams at the time) have been beaten many times by elite strike.  Most of the time not even fielding our best team. 

Hands down best all around q2ctf player from america ever es-Dragoon.  es-vynn was not far behind him being that Vynn was from the state of Washington on an ISDN line with 100-180 pings most of the time in matches.  The last few months of q2ctf before he started playing q3 he got dsl and was a beast.

Other flaws in your list  #1 pleb #5 Nimrod (some other person I can't remember with them) on defense against es-bish and es-vynn on offense. With #8 Remourn he also had help I can't remember who was playing w/ him at the time  on offense they where all in the Peacemakers (PM) at the time.  Basically they had 3 on offense vs our 2 on defense.  Me and vynn vs's thier 3 on defense.  We won a 20 min game on q2ctf5 4-0.  I wish I still had dragoons video of that game but picture Hops or Slasher w/ the time accel and a chaingun/shotgun/railgun rape for 20 mins straight.  It was a hard fought game it took me and vynn about 15 mins to kill pleb cause he had the doc but once he went down we rolled 3 more caps off in a row.  I can honestly say I thought he botted after watching my demo over and over from that game cause he railed the crap out of me.  After finding out that Squeaky had most of ]aE[ nose paking and possibly using some form of aimbotting at one time I would say Pleb is still a soilid #1 at D but he should have an * like barry bonds.  Although I still say dragoon was a more skilled and smarter defender and pleb was just either a bad ass or lucky ass railer.

Anyway your list is littered with RD, PM, SpB, LOR, KL, Bzkr all (aside from SpB cause they where before my time in ES) beating time and time again in ES's 28-0 summer run when the OGL had thier planet league.  Back when over 200+ clans where in the OGL>

As someone else mentioned Merton should be riding pretty high on your defensive list.  We played some great ctf3, ctf5, ctf1, ctf4a, and ctf2 matches against bzkr and he was one of the smartest defenders we came up against.  I would say Punisher and Merton almost shut me and vynn out one day in ctf5 doc/amp combo.  Until dragoon came in w/ time accel chaingun on punisher while me and vynn railed merton down.  All though I will say we had no problems killing merton it was punisher who had bad packet loss he always liked to bitch about be it made him hard to hit cause he would warp 2-3 inches across the screen at a time be he still seemed to some how play pretty well.

As far as the r2d guys go.  After about 5 months after I quit ES I logged on to irc and es-jame (female) had recently moved in with nimrod.  They had started this clan calling it zoo and changing names not wanting people to think it was just es in disguise.  Although everyone thought it was me, dragoon, vynn, slee, io, spec, and eva01 still playing the matches.  It was actually me, es-spec, es-eva01, 99vc:23, es-jame (who is on lydia's skil level) and nimrod.  Anyway I play on a pub for about 3 days to get back into fighting shape we try to get some scrims together.  First game we play is against Slashers old clan I can't remember the name of it but he was going by the name of Jaded at the time.  Q2ctf2 I ran quad we smoked them 14-0 in 20 mins.     So the next night we scrim against r2d on bletys blues.  Me running quad, eva01 on defense,  spec and 23 on quad support and es-jame running around shooting grenades and firing random rockets (Think Lydia).  So r2d's team is high, brucelee, needle, hydrox, someone else can't remember.  Anyway I rocked them running quad after quad beating them 14-0.

Basically to make a long story short.  Your list = fail having only 1 es member on it.  By no means do I mean me either.  My rank of es players I played with at the time I played with them.

I wish everyone still played, pisses me off I didnt start playing 3 years before I got into this game. So OGL would still be around, and id be in my prime with a lot of shit goin down. Always makes me sad  . I remember playing with a lot of those es guys when i first got into the game, (ogl was still pretty popular, i'd say 100+ clans still, just a guess tho prolly more). I know the name dragoon, and vynn, but never really got to play with them. I do remember playing with eva01 and sleestak, I do remember eva01 being pretty decent at defense, and sleestak having a good rail, but i dont know if they should be on that list. I remember watching pickups (aliased or not) where slasher was the laughing stock of the group of guys there (keeping bish's list in mind when those guys were playing). I, particulrally, never thought sleestak was all he was cracked up to be, im fairly confident that he would get dominated in a real match setting. I also want to say (assuming everyone's still playing.) Bish puts his team together, and plays me, slasher, joem, crow, and either ksoul or twitch. I really can't see us losing a game of bletyes, especially if bish is running quad. When bish did play, he was ALWAYS a team's defender. Pretty good rail, smart defender, and could grapple pretty decent to catch up to fc if they got out of base. This is because people like, joem, and slasher were playing, bish wouldn't play quad on bletyes over them, never. But if bish was es's main quad guy...kinda makes you wonder.

Atilla and Jade were instrumental to a 45 win streak for the ]KL[ on the league for OGL. 

I would have to call BS on that 45 win streak there Legend.  I can remember ES beating KL with Atilla, Jade, and you playing on the same team.  The most memorable of them all was when we played on a ctf1 planet and we all agreed to allow the bfg and es-spec bfg quaded your whole base w/ one shot killing himself as well.  Atilla was a very cool guy and a good player but Jade thought he was better than he was.  He was in RD at one time.  RD-Whiplash, RD-Natoma, RD-Jade, RD-Nimrod, someone else that was very good as well his name slips me had attacked 2 of ES's planets ctf1 and ctf4a and we had the matches scheduled for a night that half of es was at a lan party in cali and vynn was out of town on buisness.  Slee, Dragoon, and eva01 where at a lan party.  So I ended up playing defense with biffy i think.  Io ran the quad w/ spec and someone else maybe L-fire on offense.  I ended up gettingi the amp at the start and went all of ctf1 w/o dying and stopping Natoma and Jade on offense.  I remember because that is when there was that website that would post the news and demos of ctf matches and the admin asked for my demo and a quote and my quote was "I was never in danger of dying."  I had only been in es for about 3 weeks at the time and I remember getting my ego pumped because at the time I thought Merton was the shit and he came in the IRC channel to tell me my rail was scary and he thought I should always be playing D for ES.  I had an ISDN line at the time and that was probably one of the only ES matches that i had less than a 80 ping.  We played on a dallas server I had a 35 ping, Io was from Texas, spec, was from MO so we all pinged well there.  RD all pinged 50 ish cause they where all east coast.  Basically all I remember from that match is after I railed Jade a few times he stops and types out "My ping sucks I can't play here this is BS"  He was sporting a big 65 ping.  Most of the time I saw Jade do anything is when he played on Springfield when he had a 15 ping to it pubbing it up thinking he was a bad ass.

But yes es was kl's cryptonite, usually because es was usually unwilling to ever play on an east coast server at all. Especially for a 3 map rotation, it was either west or something central all the friggin time. Not only did you guys have a great lineup, but had to try to use every advantage possible. I skipped most of this thread but I did read Rushhy's part about me. And it mostly is true. I've been an allaround idiot towards this game and the people who play it. If you took me seriously, I'm sorry. I also read some of h0p's comment towards SLY. I doubt me and SLY ever seen eye to eye. Not sure why and don't really care all that much. But what I did want to say is about his comment (h0p's) on about vent. `joem absolutly hated me (was anyone on vent for the "package deal" on suma6 where I was to guard the underwater pipe untill I drowned and then respawn and try again) untill I came on vent and was talking to everyone, then he seemed to like me more towards the end. Quite honestly, a lot of the "average" players still in this game would give quite a few of these blokes a run for their money then vs. now--- which is why it's so hard for people to make a comeback.  I remember almighty on the match server about a year ago.  It was, I think, a 3v3 and almighty was getting his ass handed to him being rusty as hell and all.  Paulwall was talking mad shit and almighty left.  Legend and I both made the comment that almighty would have bitch slapped paulwall all over the server if he'd continued playing on a semi-regular basis.   It's taken me a couple weeks (now that my connection is stable again) to get back up to speed, and I haven't been gone for 4, 5, or 6 years.  Imagine how these guys feel when a newb seems like a pro.

I miss squeaky,  rd-mo, truth, sanity, crow, and even nimrod (when he wasn't botting).

Hands down best all around q2ctf player from america ever es-Dragoon.  es-vynn was not far behind him being that Vynn was from the state of Washington on an ISDN line with 100-180 pings most of the time in matches.  The last few months of q2ctf before he started playing q3 he got dsl and was a beast.

BISH, many of these guys were easties, so they don't really appreciate the players that Drag and vynn were.  I would also put in 2 cents for Elektra (99vc).  I also want to echo re: Words as a great offensive player.  Alot of people only thought of him as a grapple monkey, but he actually developed into a good fighter as well.  Daylightstar was a great player when she was active and you know who else was monstrously good for their ping?  Witchblade (she pinged over 300).  Don't know if you remember her, but she was honorary, if not official, es in the early days, I think the only HPB es.

And since this is a SMACK forum, re: es involved in ownage.....I remember we handed it to you guys (es) on rtctf1a on OGL ladder (like 7-0 or 8-0) when we had  a decent team to play for once without crazy packet loss or lag.
