Starting sometime next Sunday, April 15, 2007, we will require all players to have a valid anticheat installation to connect to any of the CTF servers.

But you aren't.  smiley

We are allowing bad files with no limit for a period of transition, this will change after an appropriate period of time so I suggest anyone with bad files get rid of them as soon as possible.

You may have posted an explaination elsewhere, but I have already been seeing some people with 'exempt from using anti-cheat'.  For those less likely to understand, can you give a some examples of why exceptions have been issued?  It might squash some future postings?

I noticed some side conversations on the servers, which people don't think those exceptions are fair.  Thier arguement is, if it is enforced, then it should be across the board - no exceptions.  Thier arguement is valid, that for a rule to be enforced, it should be followed across the board.

Personally, I have faith in the almighty admins - so I could care less.

Anticheat will run on Windows 2000 and later only, it is not compatible with Win95, 98, ME or any flavor of Linux.

We are open to giving exceptions to some trusted individuals that are unable to run anticheat due to an incompatible operating system.

A couple of examples:

poo plays Railwarz and uses Linux. It is not possible to run anticheat with Linux. I trust poo as there has never been any indication of anything amiss with him so he gets an exemption.

Firearm plays L-Fire CTF and uses WinXP running anticheat from one location. He has another location where he is stuck with Win98 and cannot run anticheat but has plans to upgrade that computer. There has never been any indication of anything amiss with him so he gets an exemption for the Win98 box.

Those are real-world, now for hypothetical:

Player X asks for an exemption saying he can't run anticheat. I check logs and see that he has run it but would rather bitch than try to set it up correctly. Player X can go pee up a rope because he isn't getting an exemption, as much work as we put into this we do not suffer idiots well.

Player Y asks for an exemption saying he can't run anticheat. I check logs and see that he has been logged attempting to use some cheats before. It doesn't matter what operating system player Y uses now as he has shown that he can't be trusted and can join Player X on the same slippery rope.

So it boils down to us doing our best to provide a level playing field as possible to as many as possible. We will give exceptions as we see fit but they will be few and only for the right reasons. The ones that have exceptions are not the ones we suspect of any cheats.

On that subject, we have found a few pretty regular players with cheats and they have now been stopped. I am not releasing any details on this for the time being but It will be interesting to see how they do in games without them.

Wow that was pretty bad - I think I am becoming too dependant upon spell check via emails and word documents.  Thanks Wake.  smiley

Great summary Worm - I think that will squash what needs to be squashed.

Worm has been totally cool about slowly implementing anticheat and since the q2 game is so pak-able it seems to have been a good idea

q3 is so lame..it forces vanilla

and thanks to the many ppl who bitch about anything, most anybody who have an 'invalid' file are constantly reminded

it seems the new converts are resisting a bit...seen a lot of comments that past couple of days complaining about how 'anticheat is soo choppy'...i have tried to help them out

r1ch seem to have some really tight code and have no probs ...and i really like the new renderer too...it seems to redraw the screen a lot better..alt tab option is cool...optimalvid setting is cool..etc etc

if i ever win the lottery i will donate money to you few guyz who deserve it

btw i dont play the lottery

OK

That reminds me of one of my fav Ween songs,  Piss up a Rope

Goes like this: ( i think he used to date Marla)

My dinners on fire while she watches tv
And if youve ever wondered what its like to be me
She takes all my money and leaves me no smokes
Yells at my buddies and insults my folks
Im breakin my back doin the best that I can
Shes got time for the dog and none for her man
And Im no dope, but I cant cope
So hit the fuckin road and piss up a rope

You can piss up a rope
And you can put on your shoes, hit the road get truckin
Pack your bag, I dont need the ag
On your knees you big, booty bitch start suckin
You ride my ass like a horse in a saddle
Now youre up shits creek with a turd for a paddle
And I cant cope -- piss up a rope

Uh, you can piss up a rope and feel the pissy dribble
You can piss up a rope and watch me giggle
For the last 6 months I been packin your bag
You can wash my balls with a warm, wet rag
Till my balls feel smooth and soft like silk
Im sick of your mouth and your 2 percent milk
And Im no dope, but Ive lost all hope
So hit the fuckin road and piss up a rope.

gotta love Ween

I just bought you a lotto ticket Leftovers - I will let you know how you do!
I have anti loaded on 4 comps now and they all run q2 much better than before. I was THE chief complainer to worm and the others not to mandate  it as I saw what PUNKBUSTER did to Q3 and I did not want our game to suffer the same fate.
It is not hideous and maybe now we can just accuse other players on the server of being too talented or practiced.
Thanks are due to R1ch and all the folks that put so much time into it and respond so quickly when something goes buggy.

The only negative I've seen from anti-cheat is that when you first connect to a server your ping jumps up and gets choppy.  As I understand it - which I don't because I didn't write anti-cheat but of which I am convinced due to my observation of its workings - it takes a few seconds to validate your files against the server's validated file database.  After that completes, everything is peachy.  I've never had it take more than 10 seconds and I think the typical duration of the lag is about 5 or 6 seconds.

Just a heads-up for anyone complaining about it being choppy.

Worm or Rich - I've downloaded the anticheat file but still can't play quake 2.  I don't know how to get it into the quake2 system.  Will you please tell me how I can get the anticheat file into my q2 file.

Just unzip/extract all of the files (EVERY FILE) to C:\Quake2\ and use r1q2.exe to play Quake2 from now on. Piece of cake!

We will be are now requiring all Q2 clients to be updated to connect to the Q2 servers very soon. This means that if you are using an out-dated client and connecting with protocol 34 you will be denied connection until you update.

For R1Q2 clients you can run R1Q2Updater.exe in your Quake2 folder and it will check versions then download latest if needed. Download here if you don't have it: http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/r1q2/download/R1Q2Updater.zip
Extract and save to your Quake 2 game folder where riq2.exe is located. Double click to run.

I see that a couple of people...ok, three people,...are still having trouble figuring out that they need to update their clients to connect to server.

Pay attention to your console if you can not connect, the info shown there should make this easy!

If in attempting to connect you see a line on the first connect attempt telling you of a protocol 35 mismatch and that it is falling back to protocol 34 then anticheat loads and next connect message right before "connecting to 66.36.243.128..." tells you "You must use protocol 35 on this server. You are being reconnected with protocol 35 enabled." then you have an older client that is not compatible with the latest protocol 35 changes and need to update your client.

Also, you might check any cfg's and make sure you are not trying to manually set protocol 34 for some ungodly reason.

This isn't rocket science...yowza figured it out in less than 2 minutes so I know you all can too.  wink

Hello Worm,
I am running R1q2 anti-cheat and the updater, and typically play the tastyspleen servers, tho I used to play Acme ffa and a little CTF, tho I suck at ctf for lack of exp.
I have tried to connect but I must have some bad files.  Is there an exception list when connecting to a ACME server? or some files, or config files I can get rid off that I am not aware of as being unacceptable?  I have had some dozen or more mods over the years, and have deleted most that I dont play.  Any  client errors on my part I would like to take care of.
IF your q2 community is not very active and the forums are for the more recent quake versions 3, 4 and ETQW then you can ignore this post.
I have a couple of config changes that may or may not be acceptable depending on the server:

   I have gl_polyblend 0 ...for clear water            y or n
gl_flash  0....no brightness increase during weapon or ammo pickup   y or n
or any pak files that shouldnt be there.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions for  enabling me to use your servers.

I will attempt today to logon to either a dm or ctg server  and maybe you can give me some feedback.

These forums are for q2. Your best source of Help would be to join mIRC and talk to an admin there (check top left of this page for link to connect to IRC, or click on Home above)

IF you have files that have not already been screened by the anticheat server, you need to send them to WORM. or another admin and they can make exceptions. For example you may have a pak file that has a new skin for the rocket launcher, that skin wont pass the filecheck, so you need an admin to make an exception (this is done so you don't have skins that change your player models to have long noses, this is called cheating and will not be tolerated)

Hope this helps

Thanks for relaxing the AC requirement.  I noticed it when refreshing servers and it was fun playing CTF again for the first time in a few years.  I just wish something could have been done about linux clients instead of assuming they were cheaters.  If someone ever makes an AC binary that is compatible with Debian, I'll surely give it a shot!

Peace.

mmmmm.....we have a number of players using linux, as well as OSX, that have been with us for years. I gave exceptions when needed for other operating systems, all you had to do was contact me and I'm sure something could have been worked out.

Anyway, glad to see you join us.  grin

If you have proof of cheats, please forward to me privately and I will deal with the particular player. Otherwise, please stop unfounded accusations and insinuation.
